Is James Holmes faking psychosis?

Accused movie theater gunman James Holmes was not on drugs when he appeared dazed in court, but experts are looking for explanations for his odd behavior that included turning evidence bags on his hands into puppets after his arrest, sources told ABC News.

The loopy, seemingly unconcerned actions by the former Ph.D student accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 is seen by some as signs of psychosis -- or that he's faking it.

Sources tell ABC News that Holmes was not on drugs or medication at the time of the hearing, but Holmes has demonstrated a pattern of bizarre behavior since his arrest outside an Aurora, Colo., movie theater last Friday.

When Holmes was arrested he told police he was the fictitious Batman villain, The Joker. When police put evidence bags over his hands to preserve traces of gunpowder residue, Holmes pretended the bags were puppets, law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Holmes has acted unfazed by his arrest, police say. He has been uncooperative since he was taken into custody, giving investigators little information, and yet disclosing his apartment was booby trapped with dozens of explosives.

His behavior in court Monday was particularly strange. Unshaven, with a shock of died orange hair, Holmes alternated between staring wide-eyed to closing his eyes and appearing to nod off.

His lawyer even had to nudge him to rise when the judge entered the courtroom. He said nothing during the proceedings, in which he was held without bond.

Some observers wondered if Holmes was on drugs or being medicated. Sources told ABC News, he was not on drugs, leading to expert theories that he may have been in the grips of "psychotic episode," exhausted from stress or simply faking it.

"I think there are two possibilities going on here," Marissa Randazzo, former chief research psychologist for the U.S. Secret Service and an expert in mass shootings, told "Good Morning America" today.

"One is that he is in the middle of a psychotic episode which is quite possible. We see him distracted at multiple points, an almost sort of 'coming to' and trying to figure out where he is and process what's going on," she said.

"The other thing that we're seeing -- and we've seen some of this behavior in the past couple months -- might suggest mania. Meaning hyperactivity, hyper energy, been possibly up and not sleeping for days. What we might be seeing here is the post effects."

But Randazzo also said there was a third possibility. He might simply be faking it.

"It's possible," she said when asked if Holmes' behavior could be all an act. "It is possible. We'll leave that open," she said, adding that most people who lie about that sort of behavior are sociopaths and "What we've heard about his history does not suggest sociopath at all."

"Let's keep that in mind that he was studying neuroscience. He was studying exactly the type of brain issues that we're going to be talking about throughout this whole case," she said.

New clue on how brain processes visual information

ScienceDaily (July 22, 2012) ? Ever wonder how the human brain, which is constantly bombarded with millions of pieces of visual information, can filter out what's unimportant and focus on what's most useful?

The process is known as selective attention and scientists have long debated how it works. But now, researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center have discovered an important clue. Evidence from an animal study, published in the July 22 online edition of the journal Nature Neuroscience, shows that the prefrontal cortex is involved in a previously unknown way.

Two types of attention are utilized in the selective attention process -- bottom up and top down. Bottom-up attention is automatically guided to images that stand out from a background by virtue of color, shape or motion, such as a billboard on a highway. Top-down attention occurs when one's focus is consciously shifted to look for a known target in a visual scene, as when searching for a relative in a crowd.

Traditionally, scientists have believed that separate areas of the brain controlled these two processes, with bottom-up attention occurring in the posterior parietal cortex and top-down attention occurring in the prefrontal cortex.

"Our findings provide insights on the neural mechanisms behind the guidance of attention," said Christos Constantinidis, Ph.D., associate professor of neurobiology and anatomy at Wake Forest Baptist and senior author of the study. "This has implications for conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which affects millions of people worldwide. People with ADHD have difficulty filtering information and focusing attention. Our findings suggest that both the ability to focus attention intentionally and shifting attention to eye-catching but sometimes unimportant stimuli depend on the prefrontal cortex."

In the Wake Forest Baptist study, two monkeys were trained to detect images on a computer screen while activity in both areas of the brain was recorded. The visual display was designed to let one image "pop out" due to its color difference from the background, such as a red circle surrounded by green. To trigger bottom-up attention, neither the identity nor the location of the pop-out image could be predicted before it appeared. The monkeys indicated that they detected the pop-out image by pushing a lever. The neural activity associated with identifying the pop-out images occurred in the prefrontal cortex at the same time as in the posterior parietal cortex. This unexpected finding indicates early involvement of the prefrontal cortex in bottom-up attention, in addition to its known role in top-down attention, and provides new insights into the neural mechanisms of attention.

"We hope that our findings will guide future work targeting attention deficits," Constantinidis said.

The research was supported by the National Eye Institute contract ROI EY016773 and the Tab Williams Family Endowment.

Fumi Katsuki, Ph.D., a post-doctoral fellow at Wake Forest Baptist, co-authored the study.

Helpful Tips On Investing In Commercial Real Estate | Tic Tracker

It is not as hard as you think it is to get started in commercial real estate. Before you commit to a property, however, you should be well-informed and receptive to input from trusted sources. This article is here to help you arm yourself with some tips and tricks that can help you be successful.

When considering commercial real estate, you should think about the importance of honing relationships with private investors. For instance, lots of commercial properties are sold without even being listed, so having a lot of people in your network will increase your know-how and allow you to get the inside scoop on great deals.

Be careful to choose commercial properties that are solidly and simply constructed if you plan to use them as rental properties. A well-built building will attract tenants quickly because tenants want a property that is solid. In addition, these properties are low maintenance because they don?t frequently need repairs, a benefit to the owners, as well as the tenants.

It is advisable to go bigger when investing money pertaining to commercial real estate. The less units a building has, the easier it will be to lease them all out. Both sizes of buildings need commercial financing, but buildings with more units are cheaper per unit.

TIP! If you are just getting started investing, focus on just one category of investments. Select a type of property that you think would make a good place to begin, and focus on it.

The decision to invest in commercial properties can carry significant tax benefits. Investors get both depreciation benefits and interest deductions. Phantom income also exists: this type of income does not cover cash benefits but is taxed. Prior to investing in commercial real estate, you should familiarize yourself with this form of income.

When you are writing up the letters of intent, keep it simple by going for agreement on the larger issues first and let the smaller issues wait for a later time in the negotiations. This lets you get the bigger issues out of the way first and makes small issues simpler to complete.

It may be necessary to invest in some renovations before you can move into the space. Cosmetic changes like painting walls and rearranging furniture might be needed. Sometimes, you may need to move a wall in order to create a better floor plan. Decide in advice who will be responsible for these things and try to get landlords or previous owners to pay for some of it.

It is possible to spend less money cleaning up environmental hazards on commercial property. If you possess an ownership interest, you may not be fully responsible for cleanup costs. It can be very expensive for you to clean up your property and dispose of the waste. To avoid this nightmare, have an environmental inspection done on the property prior to buying it. Whilst such a report can be expensive, you should view the cost as an investment that could save you a fortune in clean up fees.

TIP! All of your property buying ventures should include feng shui in their decor. Two of the most basic principles of feng shui- open spaces and clutter-free lifestyles -are also very appealing to buyers.

As you have seen, it is important to do your research before jumping into investing in commercial real estate. Now that you have read this article, however, lack of information should not be a problem, so get out there and start

Dad of 6-Year-Old Who Died in - The Blaze

An Aurora, Colo., man was awoken at 3 a.m. by a family member calling from New York to tell him his ex-wife had been shot. It was unknown at the time where his 6-year-old child was. Both were at the tragic shooting at the midnight showing of ?The Dark Knight Rises? in Colorado. Then he learned of the tragic news.

(Related: See other stories on The Blaze relating to the ?Dark Knight? shooting)

?After three hours of sitting at the children?s hospital in Aurora, I found out my child was dead,? the unnamed man said to KDVR in an interview. ?After being thrown in circles and?circles?and telling me you?ll be able to see her in just a moment, I found out my child is dead.?

After this comment, the man who was facing away from the camera goes silent, shaking his head. Watch the interview:

KDVR reports that the man became enraged at one point and had to be detained by police. His daughter was one of 12 killed in the shootings that occurred around 12:30 a.m. Reports indicate at least 59 were been injured in the scene thus far.

The man has not been admitted to the Aurora Medical Center to see his ex-wife allegedly because of a comment he had made.

?I need to make sure that she?s at least okay. I?ve lost the rest of my family,? he said.

When told the suspected gunman, 24-year-old James Holmes, was still alive, this man said,??Hopefully some people at least have some common courtesy and take care of somebody who has the willpower to murder an innocent child and other innocent people,? he said. ?Hopefully the law enforcement has some kind of courtesy and some kind of basic justice.?

Fox News Insider posted a longer version of the heart-breaking interview. Watch it here:

Ceramic Painting | Pennapic Arts and Entertainment

You know that every good piece of garden that you see sometimes in the gardens, but not the plastic. Or set of pipes that sit on the kitchen table. Or maybe some love beautiful ornaments and vases that you saw in the stores. There are many things that are made from ceramic, to improve our equipment, and you can really painted them and their own, so they are unique and one of a kind item.

Ceramic Painting

Ceramic Painting

But first you have an unfinished piece. A little background helps about how ceramics are made, as they can actually be painted in different levels for different effects through many different phases and go. With these different options as attractive as ceramic paint.

To a portion of the ceramic mold is required. Matter is that which is to make design or determine which pieces will be. You can use a form of a vase. This is a special form of heavy plaster mold, which comes in two or more pieces. Mushroom with some heavy elastic bands, and then filled with a special liquid clay roof tiles. After a short time the liquid is poured from the sound and remains dry over night to die. Some of the liquid will be carried out, the sound mold for forming the object.

As long as the mold is left to sit and dry, depending on how big a piece. This is just dry to the point where new ceramic pieces can be removed from the mold and hold its shape alone. Now this part is out of the mold in a carefully dried so that it can be removed.

After completely dry, it can be treated with caution should all layers in which he will be cleaned in the form. So you can see the stabbing did eventually. It looks as if it were in one piece.

Now it is at this stage of the ceramic object, the green house. It can be sprayed with a special ceramic color at this point. Then have a very hot oven to bake a special ceramic at extreme temperatures makes it very difficult to walk. Is roasted when you paint the barn green, then with a shiny surface to occur as soon as you board.

If you do not want the true color green, you have the fire in the furnace when the furnace is now called the biscuit. Now you can paint your bisque to finished piece. So that gives the basics of ceramic painting from beginning to end, and now you are ready to design your own special items.

The New Public Ivies

Coursera, Ng says, is about expanding access to the content, if not the full experience. Driven by ever-broader demand, higher education costs have soared in the past two decades, leaving even middle-class families struggling to afford college. Those who can afford a place like Caltech, and who get in, probably aren?t going to abandon that opportunity in favor of an online education. It?s those students who can?t, or don?t, who will avail themselves of the school?s online offerings. Just as important, the a la carte menu of classes will draw in loads of people who aren?t full-time students and who don?t have the time or money to enroll in formal continuing education programs. People like Chris Wilson, who took Ng?s machine learning class online last fall and blogged about it for Slate.

Kitty Wells, country music star, dies at 92

NASHVILLE (Reuters) - Kitty Wells, the "Queen of Country Music," died this morning at her home in Nashville surrounded by family members, of complications from a stroke. She was 92.

Among those mourning her today was Loretta Lynn, whose own rise to popularity came after Wells opened the doors for strong female voices in country music. "Kitty Wells will always be the greatest female country singer of all times," said Lynn in a statement released on her web site.

"She was my hero. If I had never heard of Kitty Wells, I don't think I would have been a singer myself. I wanted to sound just like her, but as far as I am concerned, no one will ever be as great as Kitty Wells.

"She truly is the Queen of Country Music."

Wells, born as Ellen Muriel Deason Wright, actually began performing on local radio in Nashville, but her ascent to stage stardom began in 1937 with husband Johnnie, half of the duo Johnnie & Jack. He died in 2011.

She was the first female singer to reach the top of the country charts with her 1952 song "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," an answer to Hank Thompson's "The Wild Side of Life," which made the argument God indeed makes such angels.

Wells was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1976.

"Kitty Wells was a 33-year-old wife and mother when her immortal recording of ?It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels' suddenly made her a star," according to the Hall of Fame's biography.

"Other female country singers of her day were trying their hands at hard-living, honky-tonk songs, but it was the intense and piercing style of Kitty Wells, with her gospel-touched vocals and tearful restraint that resonated with country audiences of the time and broke the industry barriers for women."

Wells was born in Nashville to a musical family. She first began performing on the radio with her two sisters and a cousin, the quartet going by the name of the Deason Sisters.

She married Wright in 1937 and she joined by her husband and his sister, Louise, to perform as Johnnie Wright and the Harmony Girls.

It was two years later that Wright began performing with Jack Anglin as the duo Johnnie & Jack.

While she performed with them as a girl singer in the 1940s, her husband began calling her "Kitty Wells," a name taken from a 19th century folk song.

'SWEET, GENTLE LADY'

Harold Bradley, 86, the venerable Nashville session guitarist whose brother, Owen Bradley, produced so many of her recordings, said there was no better person to work with than Wells.

"I worked a lot of her sessions, of course, that Owen produced," said Bradley, the most-recorded guitarist in history. "She was the most sweet, gentle lady. She always knew her songs when she came in and she was very easy to work with."

In addition to "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," which sold 800,000 copies in its initial release in the summer of 1952, according to the Hall of Fame biography, Wells sang "Release Me," "Making Believe," "I Can't Stop Loving You" among other classic songs.

She garnered 35 Billboard Top Ten records and 81 charted singles.

Michael McCall, writer and editor at the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum, said Wells' importance to the emergence of women singing hit records "cannot be overstated."

He said Wells proved to the industry that a woman singer could sell and headline big shows.

"She opened the doors for everybody that came after her," McCall said. "It was just a huge shift in how things were perceived. It was so important that it happened."

He said Honky Tonk Angels was controversial at the time, and some radio stations wouldn't play it. She wasn't allowed to sing the song on the NBC segment of the Grand Ole Opry when it first came out.

"The fans rallied around her to prove the record industry wrong," said McCall.

"She was one of the major recording artists of the 1950s and into the 1960s," said McCall. "She has had so many country classics and so many songs that came from a woman's point of view that were often about wayward and faithless men."

Her straightforward manner and subject matter was a major influence on the song-writing and singing of Lynn and Dolly Parton, setting the stage for today's female country stars.

"We live in an age when people over-sing so much and put so much emphasis on the emotion. She showed sometimes it's more emotional by having restraint rather than trying to oversell it," said McCall.

Among her many honors, she was given the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1991, the same year as Bob Dylan and John Lennon were so honored.

She was just the third country singer to be get that most prestigious award, after Hank Williams and Roy Acuff.

She finally gave up touring in 2007 and continued to live a quiet life, so much differently than the subjects of her songs.

Her funeral will be Friday.

The First Americans

?Would you use a buffalo bladder as a canteen or wear a coat made out of seal skin? Native Americans cleverly used everything in their environment in order to survive. They created games, recipes, tools, and homes based on their surroundings. A word search review game is included.
????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

?The First Americans, written by Kelly Bakshi, is the story??? of how early Native Americans crossed the Bering Strait from? Asia to Alaska by foot when it was frozen solid,? thousands of?? years ago.? This creative non-fiction book will draw the interest? of children, as they will be able to identify with the children of? different regions so long ago.? They?ll find themselves walking? into the far north where they will meet Ahna from the Inuit? Tribe. They?ll find out about her igloo, how it was built, and how? Ahna lives and survives the elements.?

?Traveling on to the North West coast of the United States? further south, children will meet Malid of the Kwakuitl Tribe.?? He will tell them how he honors the Earth, finds his food, and? what creative things his tribe does with the trees.

As their trip continues to the Southwest where it is a warm dry climate they will say hello to Catori of the Hopi Tribe.? Catori?s people live in a very unusual building made of clay with no doors.? Children will delight in the way one must enter their home.

Further East, Hinto of the Dakota Tribe will peak their interest when he explains how his life revolves around, where the buffalo roam.? Hinto lives in a portable house made of many animal skins.

The famous Hiawatha from the Iroquois Tribe in the Eastern Woodlands will tell children of her many accomplishments.? Hiawatha?s people live in large strange looking houses, and the tribes of her people give much power to woman.

Moving on to the Southwest they meet Quigaltanqui of the Natchez Tribe.? This child of early times lives in a warm mild climate.? Children will learn how this tribe?s class of people is ever changing.

These Native Americans worked hard, and they played hard.? This book lends education to games they played, and what they did to survive and eat well.? The First Americans book explains about storytelling, crafts, activities of these early Native Americans, as well as much detail to their traditions, and survival.

The time line for when the first Americans crossed the Bering Strait is of great controversy among those who study the subject, but no matter what the time span; whether it be 30,000 or 15,000 years ago, I think this would be a book valued by any parent, teacher, librarian, and certainly I feel this is a book children will not only enjoy, but also, remember and value.??

The pictures in The First Americans book for children are brilliant, expressive, and quite informative.? I enjoyed this book, and give it five stars ***** for educational content, drawings, and photos.

This review was written by Susan Hornbach, author of children?s literature.

CERN Finds New Particle (And it Might be the Higgs Boson!)

After both likely and far-fetched rumors made their rounds on the web for weeks, CERN?the European Counsel for Nuclear Research that runs the largest particle accelerator in the world?finally announced its big Higgs boson news today.

And it seems to be worth the wait.?One of the most elusive scientific mysteries of the past century looks like it?s on its way to being solved.

By analyzing trillions of proton-proton particle collisions from this year and last, researchers have found "strong indications for the presence of a new particle which could be the Higgs boson," according to the CERN website and a press conference early this morning. The painstaking process of sifting through the results from subatomic collision after collision seems to have paid off. Now they just need to crunch all the numbers for a new paper to be published at the end of the month.

Although the Higgs is a complicated little particle, basically, scientists think that it acts like a conductor. The theory is that the Higgs tells other particles (protons, neutrons) how much mass they need to collect. Without it, atoms themselves could never form. The Higgs boson is the reason that anything in our world has mass at all.

What a drag, Israeli firm grows "highless" marijuana

SAFED, Israel | Tue Jul 3, 2012 7:02am EDT

SAFED, Israel (Reuters) - They grow in a secret location in northern Israel. A tall fence, security cameras and an armed guard protect them from criminals. A hint of their sweet-scented blossom carries in the air: rows and rows of cannabis plants, as far as the eye can see.

It is here, at a medical marijuana plantation atop the hills of the Galilee, where researchers say they have developed marijuana that can be used to ease the symptoms of some ailments without getting patients high.

"Sometimes the high is not always what they need. Sometimes it is an unwanted side effect. For some of the people it's not even pleasant," said Zack Klein, head of development at Tikun Olam, the company that developed the plant.

Cannabis has more than 60 constituents called cannabinoids. THC is perhaps the best known of those, less so for its medical benefits and more for its psychoactive properties that give people a "high" feeling.

But cannabis also contains Cannabidiol, or CBD, a substance that some researchers say has anti-inflammatory benefits. Unlike THC, it hardly binds to the brain's receptors and can therefore work without getting patients stoned.

"CBD plants are available in different forms all over the world," said Klein, adding that the company's plant is free of THC and very high in CBD.

Tikun Olam began its research on CBD enhanced cannabis in 2009 and about six months ago they came up with Avidekel, Klein said, a cannabis strain that contains 15.8 percent CBD and only traces of THC, less than one percent.

CANNABIS AS MEDICINE

Marijuana is an illegal drug in Israel. Medicinal use of it was first permitted in 1993, according to the health ministry.

Today cannabis is used in Israel to treat 9,000 people suffering from illnesses such as cancer, Parkinson's, multiple sclerosis, Crohn's disease and post traumatic stress disorder, according to Israel's health ministry.

Drug companies have also been interested in cannabis as a medicine. Britain's GW Pharmaceuticals, with Bayer and Almirall, sells an under-the-tongue spray called Sativex that is designed to minimize highs by manipulating ratios of active ingredients.

Raphael Mechoulam, a professor of medicinal chemistry at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, said Avidekel is thought to be the first CBD-enriched cannabis plant with no THC to have been developed in Israel.

"It is possible that (Avidekel's) CBD to THC ratio is the highest among medical marijuana companies in the world, but the industry is not very organized, so one cannot keep exact track of what each company is doing," he explained.

Although there have been no clinical trials in humans, Mechoulam, who is a leading researcher of cannabinoids, said that Avidekel showed promise as a potent anti-inflammatory.

Ruth Gallily of the Hebrew University who works for the company and has been studying CBD for more than 12 years, said she has found that the substance has impressive anti-inflammatory qualities. She has been testing the effects of Tikun Olam's CBD-enhanced cannabis on mice and expects clinical trials to begin in a few months.

Avidekel is a new strain of a plant that is already permitted for medical use so there is nothing stopping patients who are already being treated with marijuana from trying Avidekel. About 10 patients began using it in the past six months, Klein said.

"The cannabis plant, enriched with CBD, can be used for treating diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, colitis, liver inflammation, heart disease and diabetes," she said, adding there are no side effects.

"It's a huge advantage," said one 35-year-old patient who asked not to be identified, "I can smoke during the day, function with a lot less pain and still be focused, work and drive. It is a great gift."

The woman began suffering chronic pains after a tumor was removed from her spine. She began treatment with regular THC-containing marijuana eight months ago. Two months ago she started smoking Avidekel.

"The difference is huge. Before, I would only smoke at the end of the day and stay in pain." Now, she said, with the highless marijuana "my life is so much better."

Despite Avidekel's highless benefit, Klein does not see regular marijuana disappearing any time soon. THC has its own unique effects that alleviate illness symptoms.

"Don't worry, I think that cannabis with THC will still be (around)," he said.
