Writebox (for iPad)

If you're searching for a great note-taking app for your iPad, and having a distraction-free writing environment is one of your needs, Writebox ($1.99) offers a clean interface and connectivity with Dropbox for storage. Distraction-free editors offer a highly pared down experience, ditching formatting and other features in the name of simplicity, so don't expect Writebox to come with any bells and whistles. Price-wise, it's on par with the ad-free version of PlainText ($1.99, free for ad supported version), although Writebox comes with a couple of value-adds.

For starters, it also works as a Web app and Chrome app (free), so you can always get at your notes from any browser when you have an Internet connection. Second, although it does maintain a distraction-free view, it adds a tiny character count at the bottom of the right corner of the screen, should you need to keep an eye on length. But, similar to PlainText, Writebox only integrates with Dropbox for additional storage, and both apps would benefit from expanding their reach to other cloud storage solution providers.

Getting Started
When you first visit buy and install the Writebox iPad app, you'll be asked to sign into your Dropbox account. To use Writebox, you don't need a Writebox account of any kind (simplicity at its finest), but when you connect to Dropbox, the app does require total access to all your folders. There's no way to restrict it to only certain folders.

The app's interface is extraordinarily clean. A small top-line menu bar has two buttons on the left (a button that opens the storage pane, and a new file button) and three on the right (two circling arrows that reverts an active file to its last saved state, a share, and a sync button. The share button curiously hides a few features that have nothing to do with sharing; more on that in a moment.

Other than that, you'll see a big, blank screen, where you can type. When you have an active document, you'll see two more features, both of which I like quite a bit. One is a set of arrows for moving the cursor forward or backward one space at a time, for those of us who have a hard time manipulating the cursor using the press-and-hold magnifying glass feature in iOS. The second addition is a small running character count in the bottom right of the screen. In the Web app, you also see line and word counts, and can suppress all the number if you don't like to see them. In the iPad app, you only see characters, and there's no way to turn it off.

Customization and Use
Customization options, which are confusingly hidden behind the share button, are minimal, but some are quite necessary, such as being able to change the colors of the text and background, increase or decrease the point size, and adjust the typeface. You can't change the amount of space between lines in the iPad app, although you can in the Web app.

From the storage pane button in Writebox, you can navigate your entire Dropbox folder structure and save new text files anywhere you'd like. Among existing files, only .txt formatted documents will appear, though, as it's the only file type supported by the simple app.

When you get to typing and editing in Writebox, the storage navigation pane disappears to leave you with a very basic editing area, the idea being you won't be distracted from anything in the app and can focus on writing. Press the sync button, and your changes will be pushed to Dropbox.

Writebox for Simply Writing
For a $1.99 app, Writebox for iPad is an inexpensive text-editing tool that keeps distractions out of sight. Writebox is only available for iOS, Chrome, and the Web at the moment, although the latter two work well and save documents reliably from virtually any Internet-enabled platform. While some iPad owners might be peeved to pay for an app that's otherwise free, at least the price is reasonable and in line with other apps of its ilk. Writebox certainly holds its own as a distraction-free text editor, bearing in mind that it's already quite a niche product. It would be a much more useful app if it supported more syncing and storage solutions beyond Dropbox.

Wine Spectator - Russia Silences Wine Advertising | Wine Report ...

?Russia?s latest salvo in a long battle against alcohol abuse by its citizens is a sweeping ban on all alcohol advertising in media outlets. It?s likely to have an unforeseen victim: the country?s small but booming wine culture.

Russian governments have fought the country?s age-old culture of hard drinking for more than a century. A 2011 global report by the World Health Organization (WHO) on alcohol abuse cited Russia and its neighbors as the hardest-drinking countries in the world. Now, provoked partly by a rising tide of youthful beer binge drinking, the government is cracking down on what it sees as an important public health issue.

Few observers think Russia?s newly emerging and increasingly sophisticated fine wine scene was in the sights of the legislature, the Duma, when it enacted the advertising ban last summer. Nonetheless, the law, which took effect Jan. 1, has had an impact. It makes no distinction between beer, wine and spirits. All advertisements are banned in both traditional and online media, and state authorities have warned the ban may be applied to the editorial content of wine publications and newspaper wine columns.

?Wine is not one of the hit targets of the government ? yet,? said Spiros Malandrakis, an analyst of the global drinks markets for Euromonitor International, a London-based market research firm. ?They mostly focus on hard liquor and beer, but the law makes no distinction.? Beer in particular has been a sore point, and to stem the tide of its growth among young people (Russia?s legal drinking age is 18), the government in recent years has doubled excise taxes, limited hours of sale and, as of January, outlawed sales from sidewalk kiosks.

According to WHO?s 2011 study, the average Russian drinks the equivalent of about 15.7 liters of pure alcohol per year?65 percent more than in the U.S. Nearly two-thirds of the alcohol consumed comes from hard liquor, one third comes from beer and only 1 percent from wine?.

The Right Justified Home Screen

The Right Justified Home ScreenReader WharlsScreenName has a very minimal setup with two handy launchers for all the most important apps, justified to the right of the screen. Here's what you need to recreate it.

WharlsScreenName is using:

  • ROM: AOKP (PUB build) for the circle-cog battery meter, resized and recolored nav bar.
  • Launcher: Nova Launcher (though Apex would work too)
  • Date Widget: Minimalistic Text
  • Dock Letter Icons: Simple Text
  • Circle Launcher for the apps, resized to a small dot. On the left is another Circle Launcher with important contacts inside.
  • This wallpaper. This look works pretty well with any wallpaper that has darker shades to the top and bottom, but this Winter one fits especially well?the stars and Circle Launcher dots blend nicely.

The screen to the right has informational widgets (weather, calendar), the screen to the left has a more standard icons & folders view of less important apps.

Do you have an awesome, tweaked-into-oblivion home or lock screen of your own that you'd like to share? Go ahead and post it on the #homescreenshowcase forum with a description of how you made it and it may be the next featured home screen.

China's complicated history with video games: when a ban isn't really a ban

A cubical shop in Huaqiangbei offering legit foreign game consoles.

Earlier this week, China Daily quoted an anonymous government source -- allegedly straight from the Ministry of Culture -- saying China is considering lifting a 12-year-old "ban" on game consoles soon. While it's was unclear how reliable the source was at the time, the Tokyo stock market sucked it up anyway, with Bloomberg observing a significant rise for Sony and Nintendo after the rumor was published. Then today we learned from Tech In Asia that yesterday, Dongfang Daily spoke to two representatives from the Ministry of Culture, one of which said the department have never looked into lifting the ban, while the other person was more vague about the matter. But here's the thing: game consoles were never really banned in China. Allow us to set the record straight for you.

Transportation chief LaHood to step down

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said on Tuesday he planned to resign, marking the latest departure from President Barack Obama's Cabinet as the administration tries to find the root cause of safety problems with Boeing's Dreamliner plane.

The Republican and former Illinois congressman brought a bipartisan element to the Democratic president's team, and his legislative skills helped Obama win approval of a new highway funding bill last year that had been stalled due to political bickering.

"As Secretary of Transportation, he has fought to create jobs and grow our economy by rebuilding our roads, bridges and transit systems," Obama said in a statement.

"Years ago, we were drawn together by a shared belief that those of us in public service owe an allegiance not to party or faction, but to the people we were elected to represent. And Ray has never wavered in that belief," Obama added.

Obama has nominated another Republican, former Senator Chuck Hagel, to be defense secretary.

LaHood maintained strong ties to Republican leaders despite serving in a Democratic administration and had a reputation as a straight shooter and legislative tactician.

Still, the Republican party has swung hard to the right in contrast to LaHood's more moderate stance.

In a statement to Transportation Department employees, he said he would continue to serve as secretary until the Senate has confirmed his successor.

His departure offers Obama another opportunity to bring fresh blood and ideas into the administration as it begins its final four years. After nominating Hagel and other white men to four prominent administration posts, Obama is under pressure to bring more women and minorities into his cabinet.

Secretary of Labor Hilda Solis has already left, Environmental Protection Agency chief Lisa Jackson has announced plans to go and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, the highest- profile woman in the Cabinet, is leaving imminently. The Senate is expected to confirm Senator John Kerry to succeed Clinton later on Tuesday.

The list of LaHood's possible successors includes former Washington Governor Chris Gregoire, former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, former Federal Aviation Administration head Jane Garvey and National Transportation Safety Board Chairman Debbie Hersman.

Two major challenges facing the next secretary are modernizing the U.S. air traffic control system and finding a way to pay for the United States' huge infrastructure needs, said Joshua Schank, president of the Eno Center for Transportation, a non-partisan think tank.

A more immediate issue that could confront his successor are problems with Boeing Co's 787 Dreamliner that prompted the government to ground the recently launched plane earlier this month.

LaHood said last week the administration was working with the largest U.S. exporter to return the plane to service "as quickly as possible."

"But we must be confident that the problems are solved before we can move forward," he said.

'STOP DRIVING'

LaHood also spent months in the national spotlight in 2009 and 2010 when Toyota recalled millions of vehicles for unintended acceleration problems.

He sent the company's stock tumbling when he told a congressional panel that his advice for Toyota owners was to "stop driving" the recalled cars.

He backpedaled later that day, telling reporters his comment was "obviously a misstatement" and he merely meant to say owners should take their car to the dealer to have it checked out.

Ed Hamberger, president of the Association of American Railroads, said LaHood brought "passion, energy and a deep commitment to safety" to his work at the department.

In his statement, LaHood identified safety as an area where the department had made progress in the last four years, citing a new initiative to reduce distracted driving and "a rule to combat pilot fatigue that was years in the making."

House of Representatives Democratic Whip Steny Hoyer said LaHood's campaign to stop people from texting or talking on the phone while driving would help to save "countless lives."

Janet Kavinoky, executive director for transportation and infrastructure at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, said LaHood deserved praise for quickly implementing the highway funding bill and for creating a new freight council to look at ways to speed the shipment of goods.

LaHood also oversaw the dispersal of $48 billion in transportation funding under the 2009 economic stimulus bill and awarded $2.7 billion in grants for 130 transportation projects across the country.

His political expertise was apparent in his work with state governors, the leaders charged with spending most of the federal government's highway, road and ports dollars.

"Ray LaHood's been a great partner," Michigan Governor Rick Snyder said at on Tuesday at a media briefing.

In one project of importance to Washington-area commuters, LaHood intervened with local authorities to overcome a funding dispute that threatened to stop construction extending the local Metrorail line to Dulles Airport in the Virginia suburbs.

Twitter's Vine features porn video as 'Editor's Pick' thanks to 'human error'

17 hrs.

Since Vine, Twitter's video-sharing service, launched on Thursday, it's been plagued by all sorts of woes. We noticed that it lacks privacy settings and?abuse prevention measures, Facebook prevented it from finding any friends through the social network, and now ... well, now pornographic?content has slipped?into Vine's?"Editor's Picks" section.

Vine's a rather neat service, in theory. If you've got an iOS device, you can create and share Vine videos. All you have to do is point your iPhone (or iPod Touch) at something and press your finger to the screen to record a clip up to six seconds in length (both sound and motion are captured, of course). Once done, you can share it to Vine, Twitter and Facebook. You can also use the app to browse through popular videos and those featured as "Editor's Picks."

And that's where Vine's latest troubles appear. On Monday morning, a video shared by "nsfwvine" ??an account created for the sole purpose of posting pornographic videos to Vine (hence the "Not Safe For Work" part of the name)???received the service's "Editor's Pick" badge of honor.

While the video did lose the "Editor's Pick" badge later in the morning, it was not removed from the service. Instead, it now carries a warning message declaring that the video?"may contain sensitive content" and requires a tap to be viewed. (From what we can tell, this warning message is automatically added to videos which are reported as inappropriate by Vine users.)

We have reached out to Twitter for more information regarding how the video in question?? which shows a young woman and a?sex toy?? was chosen as an "Editor's Pick." We wondered if some sort of automated process may be involved in the selection. A Twitter spokesperson explained that an actual person was actually to blame. "A human error resulted in a video with adult content becoming one of the videos in Editor's Picks," she wrote in an email to NBC News. "[U]pon realizing this mistake we removed the video immediately. We apologize to our users for the error."

We have also contacted Apple, as we suspect the Cupertino-based company is probably not all too happy about pornographic content being?prominently?featured in an iOS app. (It has banned apps for far less racy issues in the past.)

In the meantime, obscene material continues to flood into Vine. Several accounts ? including "nsfwvine" ? have been posting pornographic clips since Vine launched last week. Not all of porn clips?carry the "sensitive content" warning yet and it's not clear if any have been removed so far.

"Wow. How did this happen, Vine?" a user asked?on one of the videos, while another wondered "[c]an I flag this as inappropriate more than once?"

Let's get Serious about Relationship Weaving and Increase the ...

by Shellie Dickstein

While research today is pointing to the power of social networks and relationships to influence behavior, many of our Jewish educational professionals, including those in the field of early family engagement, have not yet shifted their thinking and approach.

The 2011 study conducted by Mark Rosen on Jewish Early Engagement in New York commissioned by UJA-Federation of New York, states that, ?Social networks play an important role in parental decision making. Parents? choices are often influenced by friends ? they seek recommendations from peers and go where their friends go.? And the recent UJA-Federation 2011 Jewish Community Study of New York finds ?a very close and powerful association of Jewish social connection with level of Jewish engagement.?

In order to build on the findings from the 2011 research conducted by Mark Rosen, our Early Childhood and Family Engagement team at The Jewish Education Project, wanted to gain a deeper understanding of how beginning Jewish families experience this new life stage, how they form relationships with other parents, and about their relationship to Judaism. To find out, we spoke to those parents who normally do not talk about their Jewish lives. Under the leadership of our Associate Director for Strategic Research and Insights, we conducted a series of parent focus groups this past summer with ?unengaged? Jewish moms with 1st children ages 0-2 from Manhattan and Brownstone Brooklyn. We recruited participants by posting on parent and neighborhood listserves, and in facebook groups, by standing in front of baby clothing stores, and through word of mouth. Our final group of 35 moms varied in age from 20?s to 40?s. Some worked full time and some part time; there were one or two single moms and some had non-Jewish spouses ? all were raising their children Jewish.

When we spoke to the moms, we were struck by their profound desire for intimate peer relationships (they compared finding friends to dating for spouses); their deep interest in experiencing food, ?fun? and celebration; and their focus on managing and navigating their challenging transition to parenthood. We heard loudly and clearly that these new parents primary focus is not on increasing their Jewish connections or practice, but on being the best parent they can be and on finding relationships that support them. They often spoke about seeking and finding meaningful connections in ?organic? ways ? meaning, not too controlled or contrived by others. Here is what two moms shared with us that suggest this approach:

?I think if there were a website where somebody could sign up to cook on this day or that ? if you have within a neighborhood a group of people who do not have a physical space but want to have dinner every few months? there could be a community aspect to this website. Something for cooking on Friday nights or holidays.? Park Slope mom of 22 month old

?And you could find other Jewish families [on this website], because for me, it?s hard to find other Jewish families. I would like to have some Jewish friends where we can get together on a Friday night and have Shabbat dinner?. ?Upper West Side mom of a 15 month old

We also found that some moms had a sense of the community they might like to belong to but not sure how to find it or achieve it. Another mom said, ?Growing up in a Jewish community, everyone is kind of there for each other? I have never seen that in any other community?. For example. I have friends that live in Englewood, NJ. When they had their babies, they had a calendar of who is going to cook for [the mom] who just gave birth and all their meals are taken care of for a while. In the city I asked my friends, where is my dinner? Upper West Side Mom of 14 month old

Dog Treat Made from Bull Penis May Pose Health Risks

When dog owners toss their canine companions a bully stick to chew on, they might not be aware that the popular treat could be packed with calories and contaminated with bacteria, researchers say. And pet owners might not even know that the stick is made from an uncooked, dried bull penis.

In a small study, researchers examined a sample of 26 bully sticks, also known as pizzle sticks, manufactured in the United States and Canada. They found that the treats contained 9 to 22 calories per inch. That means the average 6-inch bully stick potentially represents 9 percent of the recommended daily calorie count for a larger 50-pound (22-kilogram) dog and 30 percent of the requirements for a smaller 10-pound (4.5-kg) dog ? a significant source of calories pet owners might not be aware of.

"With obesity in pets on the rise, it is important for pet owners to factor in not only their dog's food, but also treats and table food," researcher Lisa Freeman, a professor of nutrition at Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, said in a statement.

Tests for bacteria showed that one of the treats contained Clostridium difficile, one was contaminated with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), and seven contained E. coli. The researchers noted that their sample was small and a more extensive study is needed to investigate the widespread contamination rate in bully sticks. But they said their results at least suggest pet owners should wash their hands after touching such treats, as they would with any raw meat.

(This isn't the first time a pet treat has been linked with contamination. Researchers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported in 2010 in the journal Pediatrics that an outbreak of salmonella in 79 people between 2006 and 2008 was caused by contaminated dry pet food.)

While the source of the bully sticks is no secret, many pet owners don't seem to be aware that the treats are made from the raw penises of bulls or steers, a survey by the research team showed. A 20-question online poll completed by 852 dog owners from 44 states and six countries showed that 44 percent of respondents could correctly identify the source of bully sticks as bull penises. (Twenty-three percent said they fed their dogs the treats.) And there was even some confusion among veterinarians ? an unimpressive majority of vets (62 percent) polled by the researchers knew where bully sticks came from.

"We were surprised at the clear misconceptions pet owners and veterinarians have with pet foods and many of the popular raw animal-product based pet treats currently on the market," said Freeman in a statement. "For example, 71 percent of people feeding bully sticks to their pets stated they avoid by-products in pet foods, yet bully sticks are, for all intents and purposes, an animal by-product."

The research is detailed in this month's issue of the Canadian Veterinary Journal.

Azarenka beats Li, defends Australian Open title

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) -- Victoria Azarenka had the bulk of the crowd against her. The fireworks were fizzling out, and when she looked over the net she saw Li Na crashing to the court and almost knocking herself out.

Considering the cascading criticism she'd encountered after her previous win, Azarenka didn't need the focus of the Australian Open final to be on another medical timeout.

So after defending her title with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory over the sixth-seeded Li in one of the most unusual finals ever at Melbourne Park, Azarenka understandably dropped her racket and cried tears of relief late Saturday night.

She heaved as she sobbed into a towel beside the court, before regaining her composure to collect the trophy.

''It isn't easy, that's for sure, but I knew what I had to do,'' the 23-year-old Belarusian said. ''I had to stay calm. I had to stay positive. I just had to deal with the things that came onto me.''

There were a lot of those things squeezed into the 2-hour, 40-minute match. Li, who was playing her second Australian Open final in three years, twisted her ankle and tumbled to the court in the second and third sets.

The second time was on the point immediately after a 10-minute delay for the Australia Day fireworks - a familiar fixture in downtown Melbourne on Jan. 26, but not usually coinciding with a final.

Li had been sitting in her chair during the break, while Azarenka jogged and swung her racket around before leaving the court to rub some liniment into her legs to keep warm.

The 30-year-old Chinese player had tumbled to the court after twisting her left ankle and had it taped after falling in the fifth game of the second set. Immediately after the fireworks ceased, and with smoke still in the air, she twisted the ankle again, fell and hit the back of her head on the hard court.

The 2011 French Open champion was treated immediately by a tournament doctor and assessed for a concussion in another medical timeout before resuming the match.

''I think I was a little bit worried when I was falling,'' Li said, in her humorous, self-deprecating fashion. ''Because two seconds I couldn't really see anything. It was totally black.

''So when the physio come, she was like, 'Focus on my finger.' I was laughing. I was thinking, 'This is tennis court, not like hospital.'''

Li's injury was obvious and attracted even more support for her from the 15,000-strong crowd.

Azarenka had generated some bad PR by taking a medical timeout after wasting five match points on her own serve in her semifinal win over American teenager Sloane Stephens on Thursday. She came back after the break and finished off Stephens in the next game, later telling an on-court interviewer that she ''almost did the choke of the year.''

She was accused of gamesmanship and manipulating the rules to get time to regain her composure against Stephens, but defended herself by saying she actually was having difficulty breathing because of a rib injury that needed to be fixed.

That explanation didn't convince everybody. So when she walked onto Rod Laver Arena on Saturday, there were some people who booed, and others who heckled her or mimicked the distinctive hooting sound she makes when she hits the ball.

''Unfortunately, you have to go through some rough patches to achieve great things,'' she said. ''That's what makes it so special for me. I went through that, and I'm still able to kiss that beautiful trophy.''

She didn't hold a grudge.

''I was expecting way worse, to be honest. What can you do? You just have to go out there and try to play tennis in the end of the day,'' she said. ''It's a tennis match, tennis battle, final of the Australian Open. I was there to play that.

''The things what happened in the past, I did the best thing I could to explain, and it was left behind me already.''

The match contained plenty of nervy moments and tension, and 16 service breaks - nine for Li. But it also produced plenty of winners and bravery on big points.

Azarenka will retain the No. 1 ranking she's mostly held since her first Grand Slam win in Melbourne last year.

Li moved into the top five and is heartened by a recent trend of Australian runner-ups winning the French Open. She accomplished that in 2011, as did Ana Ivanovic (2008) and Maria Sharapova (2012).

''I wish I can do the same this year, as well,'' Li said.

Later Saturday, Bob and Mike Bryan won their record 13th Grand Slam men's doubles title, defeating the Dutch team of Robin Haase and Igor Sijsling 6-3, 6-4.

Sunday's men's final features two-time defending champion Novak Djokovic and U.S. Open winner Andy Murray. Djokovic is seeking to become the first man in the Open era to win three titles in a row in Australia.

Azarenka was planning a night of partying to celebrate her second major title, with her friend Redfoo and the Party Rock crew, and was hopeful of scoring some tickets to the men's final.

She said she needed to let her hair down after a draining two weeks and hoped that by being more open and frank in recent times she was clearing up any misconceptions the public had of her.

''When I came first on the tour I kind of was lost a little bit,'' he said. ''I didn't know how to open up my personality. It's very difficult when you're alone. I was independent since I was, you know, 10 years old. It was a little bit scary and I wouldn't show my personality.

''So the (last) couple of years I learned how to open up to people and to share the moments. I wasn't really good before. I hope I got better. It's your judgment.''

No criticism at Davos Japan policy aimed to guide yen: Japan economics minister

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Economics Minister Akira Amari said on Monday that there was no criticism at the World Economic Forum in Davos over the weekend that Japan's fiscal and monetary policy was aimed at guiding the yen's level.

Japan gained support for its strategy from figures including International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde and Canada's central bank governor, Amari told a news conference after a cabinet meeting.

Amari said in Davos that it was up to the market to determine the currency rates, and that the Bank of Japan had independently opted to sign a joint statement with the government on actions to fight deflation and revive economic growth.

Indonesia readies for $1 trillion trade talks

(AP) ? Indonesia may hold the key to a $1 trillion injection into the global economy.

That's how much the World Trade Organization believes is riding on talks later this year in Bali, when trade ministers hope to cut through some of the red tape that slows global commerce.

Indonesia's Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa told The Associated Press that failure is not an option and that a strong effort is being put in to ensure that the WTO meeting in Bali is "crowned with success."

The current trade talks, known as the Doha Round, began in 2001, and after a decade of little progress for a range of reasons, many had pronounced the negotiations to reduce global trade barriers as dead.

There are hopes that the current fragile state of the world economy, including the debt crisis afflicting the 17 European Union countries that use the euro and unspectacular U.S. growth, may add impetus to the discussions.

"It's very critical now, especially with the difficulties in the global economy, especially in the eurozone," he said of efforts to reach a new global free trade pact. "Trade facilitation becomes a key driver for economic recovery, so this is now even ever more important to what it was before."

Trade ministers from 24 nations met Saturday on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos in an unofficial gathering hosted by the Swiss government.

Afterward, Swiss Economic Minister Johann Schneider-Ammann said the group agreed they could reach a tentative agreement on some of the key elements of a global trade deal this summer, in preparation for the ministerial talks in December at Bali.

Schneider-Ammann said he sensed some "optimism" that efforts to streamline customs procedures and other rules to reduce the costs of trade "will be successful."

The ministers agreed to resist protectionism, focus on elements such as trade facilitation and agriculture, and to "take stock" around Easter of the progress being made, Schneider-Ammann said.

"Serious attempts to deliver results in Bali have already started," he added.

The Doha negotiations have been billed as a way of boosting economic development among the poorest countries, by reducing barriers on their exports to wealthier markets.

The WTO's director general, Pascal Lamy, has been telling the Davos gathering of political, business and academic elites that an international trade deal would provide a $1 trillion boost to the global economy. He estimates world trade is worth about $22 trillion.

Flanked by Schneider-Ammann, Lamy told reporters that he believes it is technically "do-able" to craft draft agreements on some of the key elements of a deal by next summer.

U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said he had to "temper" his enthusiasm for a deal since it has eluded the world for a decade.

Areas of dispute include tariffs on manufactured good, agricultural subsidies, market access and intellectual property rules. Brazil, China and India have resisted U.S. demands to lower taxes on imports of manufactured goods.

"But, at least of the 24 countries represented today, it felt like we had made more substantive progress," Kirk said in an AP interview. "The good news is we've spent a lot of work on a smaller, more realistic package centered around trade facilitation, which can be a huge benefit to developing economies. And it feels like that is starting to bear fruit."

Kirk, who leaves his job next month, said the ministers renewed their commitment "to double down, do what we need to do" to reach a deal in Bali. "I'm as hopeful as I've been in a long time."

Could Lightning Spur Headaches and Migraines? - Health News ...

lightning Could Lightning Spur Headaches and Migraines?

FRIDAY, Jan. 25 (HealthDay News) ? Lightning is associated with an increased risk of headaches and migraines, a new study suggests.

This finding could help chronic sufferers better predict the likelihood of a headache or migraine and begin preventive treatment, the University of Cincinnati researchers said.

The study found that chronic sufferers had a 31 percent greater risk of headache and a 28 percent increased risk of migraine on days when lightning struck within 25 miles of their homes. It did not, however, prove a cause-and-effect relationship between lightning and headaches.

New-onset headache and migraine increased by 24 percent and 23 percent, respectively, in patients when there was lightning, according to the study published online Jan. 24 in the journal Cephalalgia.

?Many studies show conflicting findings on how weather, including elements like barometric pressure and humidity, affect the onset of headaches,? study co-leader Geoffrey Martin, a fourth-year medical student at the University of Cincinnati, said in a university news release. ?However, this study very clearly shows a correlation between lightning, associated meteorological factors and headaches.?

?We used mathematical models to determine if the lightning itself was the cause of the increased frequency of headaches or whether it could be attributed to other weather factors encountered with thunderstorms,? study co-leader Dr. Vincent Martin, a headache expert and a professor in the division of general internal medicine, said in the news release.

?Our results found a 19 percent increased risk for headaches on lightning days, even after accounting for these weather factors,? he added. ?This suggests that lightning has its own unique effect on headache.?

?There are a number of ways in which lightning might trigger headaches,? Vincent Martin said. ?Electromagnetic waves emitted from lightning could trigger headaches. In addition, lightning produces increases in air pollutants like ozone and can cause release of fungal spores that might lead to migraine.?

?This study gives some insight into the tie between headaches or migraines and lightning and other meteorologic factors,? Geoffrey Martin said. ?However, the exact mechanisms through which lightning and its associated meteorologic factors trigger headache are unknown, although we do have speculations. Ultimately, the effect of weather on headache is complex, and future studies will be needed to define more precisely the role of lightning and thunderstorms on headache.?

DIY Hardwood Wood Flooring Advantages and Installation

D.I.Y. flooring? Can it be done? Installing hardwood flooring is a great way to increase the value of a home, but for many homeowners, installing the flooring themselves is the only option their budget will permit.? The beauty and design of hardwood flooring and other flooring types can be quite intimidating to the inexperienced do-it-yourselfer, but installation is relatively easy.? Simple tools and patience are all that is required to lay down a beautiful new floor.? In fact, this home improvement project can be easily completed in a weekend. Advantages of hardwood flooring Hardwood flooring is arguably the most popular type of flooring to have in any home.? Hardwood floors are easy to clean and maintain and, with some conditioning and gentle maintenance, have the natural durability to last for years.? Wood flooring is available in a wide variety of different patterns, textures and colors.? Add to this the many different shades of wood stains, and the possibilities for designing a beautiful wood floor are almost innumerable.? Hardwood floors can also be easily refinished, either by sanding or stripping the finish, so room design changes may be accommodated without removing the flooring completely.? Hardwood flooring is the best type of flooring to have in a home if anyone in the family has allergies.? Unlike the fibers of carpeting or even tile grout, hardwood floors cannot trap allergens.? Instead of having to use expensive filters on vacuums or heating and air systems, all the dust, pollen and other allergy-inducing debris can be easily swept away.? Installing a hardwood floor The average homeowner can easily lay down ProSource floors, or any other type of hardwood flooring, in a weekend.? Installing a hardwood floor requires the most basic tools, including saws, a hand drill and either hammer and nails or a nail gun.? Once the hardwood flooring has been purchased, it is important to allow it to acclimatise to the home?s atmosphere. ?Flooring should first sit for about five days at temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit and should sit up off the floor if the base flooring is concrete. Installation should begin by laying down the first row of boards along the longest wall of the room, preferably one without windows or doorways.? This should also be the wall that is perpendicular to the floor joists of the room.? Lay the first row of boards down, countersinking the nails as they are attached.? Next, ?rack the boards.?? This is a professional term for laying out the remaining boards and arranging them where they are going to go.? Rearrange them, adjusting for shading or pattern, so that they look the best, then attach them using hammer and nails or, preferably, with a nail gun.? The final boards will most likely have to be cut to fit.? Install trim around the entire floor to finish. Hardwood flooring is often complemented by other hard flooring types, such as natural stone and tile.? These types of flooring can be easily installed as well.? A wet saw, which uses a diamond blade to grind through materials instead of cutting with teeth, is necessary to properly cut the materials. ?Grout or mortar are then used to attach the flooring materials instead of nails.

I would like to thank Dave Stephenson for the guest post. My entire home is hard wood flooring. I love the cleanliness and the look of hardwood. It is quite easy to install yourself; my husband and I have done both ceramic tile and wood. It is a fun project and absolutely a worthwhile upgrade. Good Luck with your home improvement dapper friends!!?

Clearer food labels might help with healthy food choice: study

(Reuters) - Different labels on food that clearly display the total number of calories and nutrients in the entire package, rather than just part of it, might help people make healthier food choices, according to a study from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

FDA researchers, whose results appeared in Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, found that people were best at assessing things like chips and frozen meals - and comparing the healthfulness of multiple products - when the nutrition facts were presented for the entire container's worth of food, or for both one serving and the entire container.

This does away with the need to multiply the nutrition facts listed by the number of servings per package if people want to eat it all, researchers said.

"I think people really have a hard time interpreting what food labels mean," said Eric Matheson, a nutrition researcher from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

"It's almost like there's information overload," added Matheson, who did not work on the study.

Amy Lando and Serena Lo from the FDA surveyed close to 9,500 U.S. adults, showing them one of the 10 different types of food labels that presented calories and nutrients per serving, or per container, in a variety of ways.

Participants were asked how healthy they thought different products were, including how much fat, for example, was in one serving. They then compared types of chips or frozen meals to determine which was healthier.

Currently, manufacturers are given a lot of leeway when it comes to deciding how much a serving size is, according to Gina Mohr, a marketing researcher from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, who didn't contribute to the study.

To make products appear healthier, some companies have started increasing the number of servings listed per container, thus lowering the number of calories per serving. All of that adds to consumers' confusion, she said.

Researchers warned that it's still not known whether clearer nutrition facts would change what people choose to buy or eat, and it's also unclear if and when the FDA might issue changes to labeling requirements.

But having a system that lists the nutrients for one serving and an entire package - as some products do already - would help simplify things, Mohr said.

"It's so important to make the information as transparent as you can make it for consumers," she said.

Marion Nestle, a nutrition researcher from New York University, agreed, echoing Mohr's recommendation of a system like Britain's - in which the front of foods are labeled green, yellow or red on basis of their healthfulness.

"If you give somebody a big package of potato chips, they're not going to think there are five servings in it, they're going to think it has 100 calories," she said.

"I would like to see the total number of calories in a package, on a package. I don't think people should have to do the math." SOURCE: http://bit.ly/nODt9w

(AP) ? The White House says it will go ahead with Gen. John Allen's nomination to become NATO commander.

The nomination had been put on hold while the Pentagon investigated Allen's email exchanges with a Florida woman linked to a sex scandal that led David Petraeus to resign as CIA director.

The Pentagon said on Tuesday that its inspector general determined that the email exchanges did not amount to conduct unbecoming an officer.

White House press secretary Jay Carney says he hopes the Senate will consider Allen's nomination "in a timely manner."
