Pendleton was named for Judge Henry Pendleton, a jurist, legislator and soldier from Virginia. The Town of Pendleton was founded in 1790, many years prior to the founding of either Anderson County or Pickens County. Pendleton was the original courthouse seat for the Pendleton District, which served the areas that are now Anderson and Pickens Counties. ?
